This past weekend The Mikey Network team had another fun-filled day at Sunset International Speedway. We were able to watch an exciting, heart-pounding race and help raise money to place more public access defibrillators.

We are very grateful for our partnership with Mustard Seed Racing and Tarpin Lumber, who helped us put on this wonderful event to support our cause. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in holding yet another 50/50 fundraising event for The Mikey Network.

Thank you to the Mikey team that joined us for a taste of the action and to Sunset Speedway staff that was gracious enough to host us. A great family working together to support a great cause!

We hope to continue enjoying more of these action-packed weekends with such great supporters and friends.

Research conducted at St. Mike’s Rescue, the largest resuscitation research program in Canada, says that Canadians are squeamish about performing CPR on strangers – even without mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

New evidence suggests that mouth-to-mouth resuscitation doesn’t make enough of a difference to continue recommending it. New CPR guidelines introduced in 2010 say that untrained bystanders should focus on chest compressions instead and skip mouth-to-mouth.

This study also found that there are many misconceptions about CPR and cardiac arrest. Here are just some of the stats from the study:

  • Most of those surveyed couldn’t identify a cardiac arrest.
  • Only 41 per cent knew it means the heart has stopped beating.
  • Twenty-one per cent confused it with a heart attack (where the heart hasn’t stopped.)
  • Half believed 50 per cent or more individuals will survive a cardiac arrest outside hospital. The true rate is closer to eight per cent.

Here are the real facts:

  • Early CPR and defibrillation can increase the chance of survival by 75 per cent, or greater.
  • However, bystander-CPR rates have rarely exceeded 30 per cent in Canada.

These statistics are very worrying. This is why it is so important that all Canadians, even students, get proper CPR and AED education and training. The Mikey Network has a number of programs that provide education, training, and of course life-saving MIKEYS in as many high-risk, high-need locations as possible, including our Mikey Young At Heart App. Download it today.

33-lives-saved

Amazing news! We were just informed that a 33rd life has been saved by a MIKEY defibrillator!

Earlier this week, a GO Transit Safety Officer used a MIKEY on a male who was in cardiac arrest. The Safety Officer applied both CPR and the MIKEY AED until Emergency Medical Services arrived. Police later advised that, due to the Officer’s efforts, the man is expected to survive.

That makes 33 people who have been given a second chance at life!

mikey-on-the-goThis was all due to our Mikey On The GO Program. The MIKEY defibrillator that was used to save this man’s life is just one of 100 units placed throughout the GO Transit system by The Mikey Network through our Mikey On the GO program, with the generosity of Herity and Heathwood Homes. This is the fourth person who has been saved with a MIKEY AED placed through the Mikey On the GO program.

We want to thank the GO Transit Safety Officer whose quick action helped give a victim of cardiac arrest their second chance at life.

Every year, the Canada’s 911 Ride Foundation holds the Canada’s 911 Ride event, a two-day charity motorcycle ride. 2016 was the 10th year we took part in this amazing fundraising event which took place Saturday August 27th and Sunday August 28th.

Altogether, The Canada’s 911 Ride Foundation has raised over $200,000 for The Mikey Network, allowing us to place 100 MIKEY defibrillators.

During this amazing event, on-lookers watched and waved as 150 motorcyclists and support staff rode through multiple cities and towns in Southern Ontario. This continuous line of motorcycles, complete with police escort, was something to behold!

The event started in Nottawasaga Inn in Alliston, Ontario on Saturday, then continued with a two hour ride to Meaford where they stopped for a BBQ lunch hosted by the Meaford Fire Department. The Mikey Network and The Canada’s 911 Ride donated two MIKEY defibrillators to them.

From there, we took the scenic route along back roads back to Nottawasaga, enjoying the beautiful scenery the whole way. When we arrived, we took part in a dinner and presentation. The Mikey Network and The Canada’s 911 Ride donated two MIKEY defibrillators units to the Toronto Emergency Task Force, as well as two units to White Knights EMS.

The next morning on Sunday 28th we left Nottawasaga for a tour around Lake Simcoe up to Stouffville ON where we presented a MIKEY to the Teen Challenge Ontario Women’s Center. MIKEY defibrillator recipients now have peace of mind knowing help is close at hand for a second chance at life.

Members of the OPP Golden Helmets Motorcycle Precision Team showed off their amazing riding skill with a Precision Ride performance. The riders take their motorcycles through a series of complex patterns, demonstrating the maneuverability of the motorcycles and the riders’ skills.

From there we all went back to Honda Canada in Markham ON, where Honda Canada hosted a lunch for the riders.

Thank you to Canada’s 911 Ride Foundation for choosing The Mikey Network as your charity of choice! With the support of all your generous donations, The Beat Goes On…
